What are we doing:
O'Ryan will focus her time working with the new computer students on an in-class demonstration. Drawing Students will work on creating a collage. All images need to cut out of magazines and newspapers. Confused about composition and how to do this? Scroll down for videos and examples. Why are we doing this: All students have moved on to the second part of the semester, focusing on new material. Some are learning skills in Photoshop and some are learning new skills in creating a COMPOSITION using the principles and elements of design. How are we doing this: By paying attention. Class demonstrations will be rare and valuable...and very limited as we have minimal time till finals. Grab a notebook and let's get started learning Photoshop shortcuts and how to operate the program. Here is a reference sheet for your own study. Drawing students: begin forming ideas for your collage by doing research online. You can use your phones for this or an empty computer. How do I build a collage? Here is a helpful video on putting it all together. Also: rule of Thirds. Place important images in the thirds...not in the middle. Here are some examples.
What are we doing:
First, all students will determine working norms within the room, considering what it looks like and sounds like when artists are working, then agree to these as a class. Secondly, students will have switched groups and will pair up with one artist, and teach them what you did. Thirdly, students will begin reviewing the new assignments and getting to work. Why are we doing this: All students: When we have working norms, we will know exactly what we should be doing everyday. Secondly: By teaching one another, you actually develop a greater understanding of what you have learned. It's very easy to learn when you find yourself explaining it to someone else. :) Thirdly: It's time for some independence. You have to read the expectations, jot down ideas in your sketchbook, and get to work. How are we doing this: As a class, we will have a 20 min. discussion about: 1. What does it look like to be actively working on your art? 2. What does it sound like to be actively working on your art? Then: find a partner in the other group and teach them about how you did your projects. Consider the following while teaching them: 1) what did I learn? 2) How did I do this task? 3) what was the message I expressed in my work and how did I do that? 4) Am I being caring as I explain this work to my partner? What indicators are they showing that they are learning? Lastly, if you are in the new computer group, grab a computer and review the new assignments. Drawing students: begin forming ideas for your collage by doing research online. You can use your phones for this or an empty computer. By the end of class, have an idea on what your collage should be about and what map you plan on using as your background for printmaking.

Students in computers will work with O'Ryan discussing social issues and social commentary memes during the first part of class on Monday. Drawing students are carving...carving...carving. Why are we doing this: Computer students will learn about social commentary vs. social issues. In order to make a quality meme that reflects your opinions...you kind of need to know the difference between a social issue and a social commentary. You also need to understand the value that art plays in the communication of creating change for social issues. Drawing students: you just gotta carve. Seriously. How are we doing this: Computer students will review the expectations of the next assignment: then will work with O'Ryan. Drawing Students are carving. You had till Friday but I will give you till today to finish. Why? Because you will start printing tomorrow and have three non-salty prints made, plus a map image by Friday.
Deadlines: (Computers) Social Commentary Meme due by Friday. (Drawing) final prints and map print due by Friday. ALL: 4th artist due by Friday. |
